Your child’s health status has a great influence on how they are able to learn and participate in their educational experiences. Head Start Performance Standards ensure a quality program which include a requirement to complete health screens.
Well Child Exam
The Well-Child exam includes a head-to-toe assessment of your child’s health status and is to be completed by your Medical Health Care Provider. A sick visit to your Health Care Provider cannot count toward meeting this requirement.
Each Head Start student needs to complete a dental exam yearly. The Dental Exam is a complete exam of your child’s teeth and must be completed by a dentist.
A certificate status (CIS) must be completed for each child at enrollment. You must provide an Immunization Record indicating that your child has received a minimum at least one dose of each of the following to begin Head Start:
- Diphtheria Tetanus
- Haemophilus influenza B
- Hepatitis B
- Hepatitis A
Immunizations must be brought and/or maintained up-to-date or completed according to your child’s age as determined by the immunization schedule set by the State of Oregon. You may contact your local County Health Department if you have questions regarding your child’s immunization needs.
Hearing and Vision Screens
These screens are completed at the classroom by our own screeners. Parents are contacted prior to this screening so that they can participate in the process and will be notified if any concerns are identified.
The nutrition assessment is completed at the WIC office. Please call WIC to schedule a Head Start nutrition assessment.
Head Start does have limited funds to assist families with Dental and Well Child Exams if private health insurance is not available and your child does not qualify for Oregon Health Plan (OHP).
If you have any questions about the Health Services Component, and eligibility for the Oregon Health Plan, please feel free to call.
